Authorities say authorities are investigating whether the use of synthetic cannabinoids in an alleged marijuana-related homicide case could have contributed to her death.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman Jennifer St. John says investigators believe the death of 37-year-old Brittany Thomas was a result of synthetic cannabinoid poisoning.
St. Johns says she has not been publicly identified and is being treated at a hospital in Miami.
The department has not released her name.
Thomas was reported missing from her home in Tampa on Monday.
Her car was found abandoned nearby on Tuesday, and she was found unresponsive on the side of the road.
Thomas, who lived in Fort Lauderdale, was last seen wearing a green hoodie, white pants and a gray shirt, according to her ex-husband, John Thomas, who said she had recently lost weight.
He said Thomas was “fearing for her life.”
